The critical development phase is wrapping up: by the end of this week, the embryo is officially called a "fetus". Bones are slowly hardening.
What's Happening With Your Baby This Week?
- Tiny swallowing and sucking reflexes have begun; the baby can swallow amniotic fluid.
- The outer ear is taking shape and nail buds are appearing on fingers and toes.
- Bone tissue is beginning to replace cartilage; the skeletal system is strengthening.
- The brain is growing very rapidly and the head is about half the size of the body.
- The liver is producing red blood cells; this role will later be transferred to the bone marrow.
This Week's Tips for Mom
- Your calcium needs are increasing; it's recommended to get at least 1000 mg of calcium daily.
- You might start browsing your first maternity clothes for comfort; choosing those with elastic waistbands will make you feel better.
- You may experience skin changes (darkening, acne); these are hormone-related and usually temporary.
- You can talk with your doctor about the combined first-trimester screening and, if you wish, NIPT (a DNA screening test from your blood).
- You can try deep breathing exercises and relaxation techniques to manage stress.
Tip of the day: If you can't drink milk, broccoli, almonds, figs, and sesame seeds are wonderful calcium alternatives. Calcium is crucial for your baby's bone and tooth development; if intake is insufficient, your body may start using calcium from your own bones.
