What's Happening With Your Baby This Week?

  • The central nervous system has largely matured; the brain and spinal cord are working in coordination.
  • Birth position has been largely assumed; most head-down babies won't turn anymore.
  • The vernix caseosa layer is thickening; it will facilitate passage through the birth canal.
  • The lungs are maturing fast; most babies born this week do well, but they may need a hospital stay or special care for a while.
  • The immune system continues to strengthen; antibodies from mom will protect the baby in the first months after birth.

This Week's Tips for Mom

  • Watching videos about breastfeeding positions and baby holding techniques will build your confidence.
  • Packing your hospital bag would be wonderful: for mom (nightgown, slippers, nursing bra, pads), for baby (clothes, blanket, diapers).
  • Insomnia may increase; short naps during the day can help you store energy.
  • You can apply warm compresses for groin and hip pain.
  • Planning your postpartum visitor schedule now is a good idea; rest should be your priority in the first days.
Tip of the day: Real labor contractions start in your back and spread toward your groin; when you notice this, staying calm and timing them is important. Recording the interval between contractions and the duration of each one will help determine when it's time to go to the hospital.
