Most babies start turning head-down around this week, getting into birth position.
What's Happening With Your Baby This Week?
- The fine "lanugo" hair covering the body has started falling out; most will shed by birth.
- Finger and toenails have grown; some babies' nails extend past the fingertips at birth.
- Surfactant production in the lungs is maturing; breathing practice has become regular.
- The skeleton is fully formed but bones are still soft; this will facilitate passage through the birth canal.
- The baby is starting to turn into the head-down (cephalic) position; this is the ideal position for birth.
This Week's Tips for Mom
- Doctor visits will increase to weekly or bi-weekly; NST (Non-Stress Test) may be performed.
- Reviewing your birth plan one last time and sharing it with your doctor would be a good idea.
- Shortness of breath, frequent urination, and sleep disruption may reach their peak during this period.
- Your doctor will check baby's position (head-down or breech).
- Stocking up on postpartum supplies (pads, nursing pillow, diapers) at home would be great.
Tip of the day: If contractions you think are labor pains are regular, progressively stronger, and closer together, head to the hospital without delay. To tell the difference between real contractions and Braxton Hicks, note the frequency and duration of contractions.
