What's Happening With Your Baby This Week?

  • Lung branching is increasing and surfactant production has begun; this substance helps the lungs expand at birth.
  • The baby has started using the blink reflex; eyes can respond to light.
  • This week is considered the "threshold of viability"; if born now, babies have a chance of survival with intensive care, but the risks are still high, so every extra week inside counts.
  • The inner ear is fully matured; thanks to the sense of balance, the baby can perceive gravity.
  • Facial features (nose, lips, chin) have nearly reached their final birth-time appearance.

This Week's Tips for Mom

  • It's time for the glucose test (50 g screening test or 75 g OGTT, depending on your doctor); gestational diabetes screening can be very important.
  • You can start getting to know your baby's movements; they may not be the same every day yet, and regular tracking is usually recommended from week 28.
  • Sleep quality may decrease; paying attention to sleep hygiene and avoiding screens before bed will help.
  • You can start thinking about your birth plan; research options like natural birth, water birth, or cesarean.
  • Swelling in hands and feet may increase; if you're having trouble removing your ring, try reducing your salt intake a bit. If you get sudden swelling of your face or hands, a severe headache, or vision changes, contact your doctor or go to the emergency room right away.
Tip of the day: Sleeping on your side (left or right) can help blood flow to the uterus and baby. Pillows placed between your legs and under your belly will make this position much more comfortable.
