First facial expressions are starting! Your baby can frown or smile.
What's Happening With Your Baby This Week?
- Fine hairs called "lanugo" are starting to cover the entire body to help keep the baby warm.
- Facial muscles are being actively used; expressions like frowning, pouting, and blinking are now possible.
- The neck is elongating and the head is beginning to stay upright; a more proportional appearance is developing.
- The liver has started producing bile; the digestive system continues to mature.
- The palate has fully closed and the sucking reflex is strengthening; the baby can bring a thumb to its mouth.
This Week's Tips for Mom
- Since your blood volume is increasing, consuming iron-rich foods (spinach, red meat, legumes) is very beneficial.
- You can talk to your doctor about second trimester screening tests (triple or quad screen).
- Your appetite may increase; keeping healthy snacks (dried fruits, yogurt, raw almonds) nearby would be great.
- You may experience pregnancy-related nosebleeds; increased blood volume can make mucosal vessels more sensitive.
- You and your partner can start creating a baby name list; it's a fun bonding activity.
Tip of the day: Caffeine in tea and coffee can reduce iron absorption; try consuming them at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after meals. Taking iron supplements with orange juice can significantly increase absorption.
