What's Happening With Your Baby This Week?

  • The skeleton is transforming from cartilage to hard bone; the calcification process is accelerating.
  • The baby is practicing flips and somersaults inside; muscle coordination is developing.
  • Subcutaneous fat tissue (brown fat) is starting to form; it will maintain body temperature after birth.
  • The umbilical cord is thickening and strengthening; it can deliver more nutrients to the baby.
  • Fingerprints have now settled into a completely unique pattern.

This Week's Tips for Mom

  • The growing uterus may put pressure on your lower back and hips; you might consider using a maternity support belt.
  • Choosing comfortable, wide-soled shoes is a great idea; staying away from high heels is important for your safety.
  • You can start adjusting your sleep position; lying on your back can put pressure on the vena cava.
  • If you're experiencing pregnancy-related nasal congestion, you might try using a room humidifier.
  • You may feel "quickening" (first baby movements) this week; it feels like butterfly wings fluttering.
Tip of the day: Vitamin D helps calcium settle into bones; taking 15-20 minute walks on sunny days can be very beneficial. Vitamin D synthesis is reduced in areas where sunscreen is applied, so you can try leaving your arms and legs exposed to sunlight.
