Hair Loss and Hair Care During Pregnancy

During pregnancy, increased estrogen can extend the hair growth phase — which is why many mothers notice their hair becoming thicker and shinier during pregnancy. Some mothers may also experience hair loss; this is usually related to iron deficiency or thyroid issues.

For safe hair care, choosing sulfate-free shampoo may be a good idea. Evidence that biotin shampoos strengthen hair is limited; a gentle care routine is usually enough. If you want to color your hair, techniques applied to the ends (balayage, ombre) in well-ventilated spaces are considered safer. Ammonia-free dyes are preferable.

Postpartum hair loss (telogen effluvium): It can begin 2-6 months after birth. When hair that didn't fall out during pregnancy starts shedding in large amounts, it can look very frightening — but this is a temporary condition. It usually returns to normal within 6-12 months. Being patient with yourself is important.

Iron, zinc, biotin, protein, and omega-3 are valuable for hair health. If shedding is excessive, getting iron, ferritin, and thyroid tests may be beneficial. Minoxidil, used in hair loss treatment, is a product that should not be used during pregnancy.
