Vitamin and Mineral Supplements During Pregnancy
Guide to folic acid, vitamin D, omega-3, and iron supplements.

During pregnancy, getting certain vitamins and minerals through diet alone can be difficult. That's why using specific supplements with your doctor's recommendation is a very common and healthy approach. The most critical ones are folic acid, iron, vitamin D, calcium, and omega-3 fatty acids.
Folic acid is the most important supplement recommended from the moment you start planning pregnancy. It plays a major role in preventing neural tube defects. Taking it at your doctor's recommended dose, especially during the first 12 weeks, is very valuable.
Vitamin D deficiency is quite common. Vitamin D supplements may help when you don't get enough sunlight. Vitamin D supports calcium absorption and contributes to your baby's bone development. Omega-3 (DHA) is important for your baby's brain and eye development — consuming low-mercury fish or considering fish oil supplements is an option.
The most important rule when taking supplements: Don't start without doctor's approval. Leaving at least 2 hours between iron and calcium supplements rather than taking them simultaneously improves absorption. Being especially careful about herbal supplements is also recommended.
