Vegetarian and Vegan Nutrition During Pregnancy

Great news: A well-planned vegetarian and vegan diet can be healthy and adequate during pregnancy. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics states that well-planned plant-based diets are nutritionally adequate for all life stages, including pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Nutrients to pay attention to: B12 vitamin (found only in animal sources — supplementation is very important), iron (lentils, spinach, dried apricots — taking with vitamin C increases absorption), calcium (almonds, tahini, broccoli, calcium-fortified plant milk), zinc (pumpkin seeds, chickpeas, walnuts), omega-3 DHA (algae-based supplement).

To meet protein needs, combining different plant sources works well: rice + lentils, bread + peanut butter, chickpeas + bulgur. Quinoa, soy (tofu, tempeh), and hemp seeds offer a complete protein profile on their own.

Getting regular blood tests and monitoring B12, iron, vitamin D, and calcium levels is very important. Working with a dietitian can provide great support during this process. Always creating your supplement plan together with your doctor is best.
