Omega-3 and Brain Development During Pregnancy

Omega-3 fatty acids, especially DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), are truly essential for your baby's brain and retina development. A large portion of your baby's brain development occurs during pregnancy, and DHA is one of the fundamental building blocks of this process.

The best natural DHA source is fatty fish. Salmon, sardines, mackerel, and trout are safe options. Consuming 2-3 portions of low-mercury fish per week can be beneficial. Swordfish and large tuna species are recommended to avoid due to high mercury content.

If you can't eat fish, there are alternatives: Walnuts, flaxseed, and chia seeds are plant-based omega-3 sources, although their conversion rate to DHA in the body can be low. Algae-based DHA supplements can be a wonderful alternative — talking to your doctor about this is a good step.

Research shows that adequate DHA intake during pregnancy can positively affect the baby's cognitive development, visual acuity, and immune system. There are also findings suggesting benefits for postpartum mood. Following your doctor's recommended dose for supplements is always best.
