Lower Back and Back Pain During Pregnancy

The vast majority of pregnant women experience lower back or back pain. Changes in center of gravity, hormonal relaxation (relaxin hormone loosens joints), weight gain, and posture changes are the main causes. This pain usually begins from the 5th month — and you are not alone.

For correct posture: Pulling shoulders back and gently engaging abdominal muscles while standing can be helpful. Avoiding standing for long periods is wise. Using lumbar support when sitting and not crossing legs is beneficial. Bending your knees when lifting heavy objects protects your back.

Helpful exercises: Cat-cow pose (for back flexibility), pelvic tilt exercises, swimming (the buoyancy of water is truly relieving), light walking. Prenatal yoga can help strengthen back muscles.

Relief methods: Hot water bottle (on the back, not directly on the abdomen), cold compress, prenatal massage (by a certified therapist), or a pregnancy support belt can ease pain. If pain is severe, continuous, or radiating to the leg, talking to your doctor is best.
