Coping with Insomnia During Pregnancy

The vast majority of pregnant women experience sleep problems — and you are not alone in this. Hormonal changes, frequent urination, leg cramps, reflux, and growing belly can make sleep difficult. This can become more noticeable especially in the 3rd trimester.

For sleep hygiene: Going to bed and waking up at the same time every day supports regularity. Avoiding screens 2 hours before bed can help melatonin production. Keeping the bedroom cool, dark, and quiet is helpful. A warm shower or foot bath before bed can be relaxing.

Natural solutions include lavender oil (a few drops on the pillow), a herbal tea such as chamomile after checking with your doctor, and magnesium supplements with doctor's approval. These small rituals sometimes make a big difference.

If you experience snoring and breathing pauses, restless leg syndrome, or severe insomnia lasting more than 2 weeks, sharing with your doctor is a good idea. Sleep medication use during pregnancy should always be under doctor's supervision.
