A Guide to Twin and Multiple Pregnancies
Nutrition, risks, and delivery options in multiple pregnancies.

Multiple pregnancy (twins, triplets) requires special monitoring and care. More frequent doctor visits, careful nutrition, and being prepared for a preterm delivery can protect both you and your babies.
Nutrition: Calorie needs may be approximately 600 calories more than before pregnancy (about 300 calories more than a single pregnancy); it is best to determine the exact amount with your doctor. Protein, iron, and calcium needs also increase significantly. Evaluating your folic acid dose with your doctor is a good idea.
Risks: Preterm delivery, preeclampsia, gestational diabetes, and low birth weight can be more common in multiple pregnancies. Regular ultrasound monitoring and frequent doctor visits play a very important role in managing these risks — and these checkups are there for you.
Delivery: In a twin pregnancy, delivery timing depends on the type of placenta (whether the babies share one). If the first baby is head-down, vaginal delivery may be possible; however, discussing all options openly with your doctor is best.
