Sexuality and Intimacy During Pregnancy

In a normally progressing pregnancy, sexual intercourse is generally safe and does not harm the baby. The baby is well protected by amniotic fluid and the mucus plug at the cervix. However, in some situations your doctor may recommend abstaining — this is entirely for the safety of you and your baby.

Situations requiring attention include placenta previa, preterm labor threat, cervical insufficiency, water breaking, and vaginal bleeding. If these conditions are present, talking to your doctor is best.

Changes by trimester: In the 1st trimester, nausea and fatigue can cause reduced desire. In the 2nd trimester, energy increases and desire may rise. In the 3rd trimester, position changes may be needed due to the growing belly — side-lying and rear positions generally feel more comfortable.

The emotional dimension is also very important: Body image changes, hormonal fluctuations, and parenting anxiety can cause decreased desire. Open and loving communication with your partner, and alternative bonding methods like cuddling and massage can strengthen your relationship. Both of your feelings are valuable.
