Second Child: Preparing the Older Sibling
Jealousy management, inclusion strategies, and transition period.

News of a second baby can be both a source of excitement and anxiety for the older child in the family. Age-appropriate information and preparation stands out as one of the most effective ways to reduce sibling jealousy.
Preparation by age: For children under 2, concrete explanations are sufficient — "There's a baby growing in my tummy." For children ages 2-4, storytelling through books and baby dolls can be very helpful. Children over 4 may ask questions — giving honest and age-appropriate answers is best. Telling very young children too far in advance can be difficult for them.
Inclusion ideas: Involving the older sibling in nursery preparation, going to ultrasounds together, and allowing them to choose gifts for the baby can be very valuable. Presenting the "big sister/brother" role in a positive framework is lovely. When visitors come after birth, having something come for the older sibling too so they feel special is a nice touch.
After birth: Spending quality one-on-one time with the older sibling (15-20 minutes a day dedicated just to them) is very important. Regression (wetting pants again, returning to the bottle) is common during this period — responding with understanding rather than punishment yields better results. Making space for them to express their feelings, saying "It's very understandable to feel angry" supports them.
