Girl or boy?

12 folk beliefs cast their votes, and you see the result.

…

Boy or girl? It's one of the questions you hear most in pregnancy. Carrying high means a girl, carrying low a boy; craving sweets means a girl, salty food a boy. Beliefs like these are passed down for generations. This game asks 10 old wives' tales one by one and works out the Chinese birth calendar and the Mayan method from your age and due date. At the end you see how many votes each side got in a vote table.

None of these methods has any scientific validity; each is right about half the time. Blood type (Rh) has nothing to do with your baby's sex either. Once you know the sex, mark it and see how many of the tales got it right. Playing with your family and comparing results is the best part.

What you can do

  • Let the Chinese calendar and Mayan method vote automatically from your age and due date.
  • See boy and girl votes in one table, method by method.
  • Mark the sex once you know it and see what percentage of the tales got it right.

Frequently asked questions

Can old wives' tales predict a baby's sex?

They have no scientific basis. Belly shape depends on your baby's position, your muscle tone and how many pregnancies you've had; cravings and nausea are linked to hormones. Studies show these methods are no more accurate than a coin toss. Play for fun.

Does Rh blood type decide the baby's sex?

No. Whether the parents' Rh types match has nothing to do with the baby's sex. Rh incompatibility does matter medically, though: Rh-negative mothers may need an anti-D injection in pregnancy. Talk to your doctor or midwife about it.

How does the ring test work?

In the tale, a ring on a string is held over the belly; if it swings in a circle it's a girl, back and forth it's a boy. The ring moves because of tiny movements your hand makes without you noticing, not because of your baby's sex.

When and how can you find out the baby's sex?

The sex can usually be seen on ultrasound between 16 and 20 weeks. Blood tests such as NIPT can show the sex chromosomes from 10 weeks. Ask your doctor or midwife which test is right for you.
