How is the moon phase worked out?
The moon phase is calculated from the days since a known new moon, divided by the average lunar cycle of about 29.5 days. The result is rounded to one of eight phases: new moon, waxing crescent, first quarter, waxing gibbous, full moon, waning gibbous, last quarter and waning crescent.
Which year decides the Chinese zodiac?
The Chinese zodiac follows the lunar calendar, and the new year starts between late January and mid-February. So babies born in January or February may have the previous year's animal. The card takes this into account.
What are birthstones and birth flowers?
Each month is traditionally paired with a stone and a flower, for example garnet and carnation for January. These pairings vary a little between cultures; the card uses the most common list.
Is the birthday card right if I use my due date?
The card is right for the date you pick, but only a small share of babies are born exactly on their due date. After the birth you can pick the real date and make the card again.
