Nursery Preparation and Safety

Starting nursery preparation at the beginning of the 3rd trimester (weeks 28-30) can be a good idea — both when your physical energy is higher and to avoid last-minute stress. A minimalist approach helps protect both your budget and practicality.

Essential furniture: A crib meeting safety standards (bar spacing 4.5-6.5 cm), a firm and flat mattress, a changing unit, and sufficient storage space are useful. If desired, a nursing chair can also be very comfortable for night feeds.

Safety checklist: It's recommended not to leave pillows, blankets, or toys in the crib (SIDS risk). Installing outlet covers, placing corner protectors, securing furniture to walls is good. Keeping room temperature between 16-20°C (61-68°F), since overheating raises the risk of SIDS, and installing a smoke detector is also important.

What you really need vs don't need: Car seat, crib, bodysuits and onesies (5-7), swaddle, nursing pillow, baby bathtub, nasal aspirator, thermometer, and diaper cream can be considered must-haves. Items like diaper warmers and 0-6 month baby shoes often end up being unnecessary — don't fall for advertisements.
