Cutting nails
While asleep, in good light, with round-tip scissors
About 5 min
Why it matters
A newborn's nails grow fast and can scratch their face. The right technique prevents small accidents.
What you need
- Baby nail scissors (round tips) or baby nail clippers
- A baby nail file
- Good light
Step by step
- 1 Do it while your baby is asleep or very calm; nails are softer after a bath.
- 2 Work in good light and hold your baby's hand firmly but gently.
- 3 Press the fingertip pad down, away from the nail, so you can see where to cut.
- 4 Follow the curve of the finger for fingernails and cut toenails straight across; don't cut too short.
- 5 Smooth sharp corners with a file. In the first weeks, filing alone may be enough.
- 6 If you nick the skin, press a clean cloth on it for a few minutes; don't use a bandage, as your baby could put it in their mouth.
Common mistakes
- Using adult nail clippers.
- Biting the nails off; this can cause infection.
- Rushing with a baby who is awake and wriggling.
When to see a doctor
- Redness, swelling or pus around a nail.
- Bleeding that won't stop with pressure.
