Thyroid Disorders During Pregnancy
Hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism symptoms, and treatment approaches.

Balanced thyroid function is very valuable for both your and your baby's health. During pregnancy, thyroid hormone needs increase. With early detection and proper monitoring, thyroid diseases can be safely managed.
Hypothyroidism (low thyroid) is the most common thyroid disorder. Symptoms may include fatigue, weight gain, constipation, cold sensitivity, dry skin, and hair loss. Treatment with levothyroxine is safe and effective during pregnancy.
Hyperthyroidism (high thyroid) is less common. Symptoms may include palpitations, weight loss, irritability, sweating, and tremors. Treatment requires care during pregnancy — determining the most appropriate approach with your doctor is best.
If you have a history of thyroid disease, autoimmune conditions, or are taking thyroid medications, informing your doctor as soon as pregnancy begins is very important — dose adjustment may be needed. Getting TSH and free T4 tests early is a good step.
