Pregnancy is a journey that changes week by week but is hard to see day to day. Documenting your growing bump with weekly photos is one of the nicest ways to make that change visible. Months later, when you watch the series from start to finish, you see the whole stretch from your flat belly in the early weeks to the final weeks at a glance. The series stays with you, and later with your child, as one of the most tangible memories of your pregnancy.

Consistency is key to a good series. Photos taken on the same day each week, in the same place, in similar light and from the same angle, ideally from the side, show the change most clearly. Wearing the same outfit or a plain top, standing in front of the same wall and holding the phone at the same height makes comparison easier. Small differences can be distracting when you watch the series.

Your bump usually starts to show between 12 and 16 weeks, and it can be a bit later in a first pregnancy. It does not matter when you start the series. Taking the first photo this week and adding one each week is enough. Having your partner or a loved one take the photo can turn it into a small weekly ritual. It is also fine if you miss some weeks, the series still keeps its meaning.

Frequently asked questions

When do you start showing in pregnancy?

Your bump usually starts to show between 12 and 16 weeks. In a first pregnancy the abdominal muscles are tighter, so this can take until 16 to 20 weeks. If you have given birth before or are expecting twins, it shows earlier. Height, body type and the position of the uterus also play a part, so it is best not to compare.

How do you take weekly bump photos?

Take the photo on the same day each week, in the same place and in similar light. Standing side-on shows your growing bump best. Try to stand in front of a plain wall in the same or a similar outfit. Hold the phone at the same height and distance each time, and use a tripod or a steady surface if you can. That way the change is clear when you watch the series.

When should I start taking bump pictures?

You can start whenever you like. Many mothers take the first photo after finding out they are pregnant or when the bump starts to show, usually between 8 and 12 weeks. Even if your bump does not show yet, early photos are very valuable as a starting point when you watch the series. Starting late is fine too, every week you add becomes part of the series.

What should I wear for weekly bump photos?

For a weekly series, a fitted, plain-colored T-shirt or tank top works best because it shows the outline of your bump clearly. Wearing the same outfit each week makes the change more striking. You can also choose a top that leaves your bump bare. Patterned and loose clothes hide the shape of your bump, which makes the change harder to see in the series.
